(AGICOSINTERNATIONAL) - 27 July 2010 - BETTING: FORMULA1, THERE IS A PRECEDENT SAYING OVERTAKING IS NOT ILLEGAL

Despite a €100.000 fine from FIA, the "contested overtaking" gave Ferrari its first one-two for the season in Germany. Massa was easily overtaken by Alonso, unexpected result for those who had bet on Brazilian's victory. Apart from team strategies, the central question is whether some sorts of instructions are legitimate as result-altering team orders have a profound impact on gambling. As it was the case, bettors' forecasts turned out to be wrong for reasons of hierarchy within the Ferrari team. In support of the Maranello Team, however, there is a judicial precedent dating back to 2002, Rubens Barrichello slowed and allowed team-mate Schumacher to pass him for the win in Zeltweg, Austria. The result was a complaint against Ferrari as team orders artificially altered the outcome of the race but the Austrian court ruled for the Maranello team arguing that: "there is no direct rule that says Ferrari cannot give team orders, and there is no concrete evidence that such orders affects outcomes in gambling".
